Want to Connect With Your Family? Try playing these 4 board games at your next gathering.

A lot of our readers tell us they want to spend more time with family when they retire.  We think those are pretty good goals.  You don’t have to wait to retire to focus on building deeper and more meaningful relationships with your family.  One of my favorite ways to connect with family is by playing board games. Games that get us thinking or encourage storytelling always leave me feeling more connected to my family.  These are a few of my favorites.

Sway:

Sway Game Box and Cards

Description:
This is a  game of debate.  But there’s a twist – the debate happens between two people (or teams) debating different subjects. Also, you can only argue the positives of the topic.  So while one side of the debate is arguing for the merits of “catching the flu,” the other side is arguing the positive points of “spilling your drink.”

Why I love this game:
This game is one of my favorites for a few reasons. It can be played by people of all ages and across all generations. It encourages creativity and can usually get everyone laughing and talking.  It can be also be easily played around a campfire or on a road trip.

Who’s Most Likely To:

Who's Most Likely To

Description:
This game is essentially a card game where your friends a family choose a card and vote on who in the room (or out of the room) is most likely to do what is written on the card. Trying to figure out who in your family is most likely to “wake up with a burrito” or “get lost on their way home” together can be a hilarious way to connect.

Why I love this game:
This game is a little more adult so it can be really played with all ages but it is super-funny. If you like a good jab like my brothers and sister-in-laws do, this is the perfect game that is great over a few glasses of wine with family.

Apples to Apples:

Description:
You probably already heard of this fun word-association game. Apples to Apples players take turns judging the word associations of the other players.

Why I love this game:
This game is as fun as the people that you play it with. We encourage talking, debate, and all-out competition to try to get the judge to pick your card.  This game is addicting and can be played for hours.

Buffalo

Buffalo Card Game

Description:
Also a word association game, each round takes two cards and the first person to find a person or thing that represent both cards is the winner.  For example, you’re challenged to name someone (alive or fictional) this is a “British” and “Wizard.”

Why I love this game:
This game is another one that can be played by people of all ages and interests. This game sparks conversation and,  with each round, players think outside of the box and challenge stereotypes. It can also be played around a campfire or in a car so it’s a favorite for me.
